5 Hours? 45 Minutes

Today was the first day of classes. It was kinda the day I'd been dreading, because it meant that my holidays of 9 weeks had come to an end, and I had to start studying again.

I needn't have worried.

I managed to get up ok, had breakfast and dawdled my way to my 8 o'clock lecture (Intro to Software Engineering). Apparently it only takes 10 minutes to walk there, which is not too bad. Got there and more than 50% of the class had a laptop. Apparently we get marks for class participation, of which laptops can be used. I, instead, had to write the 'Introduce yourself' survey on a piece of paper.

The lecture was a typical 'first day' lecture, with the course outline, and a very brief introduction to the material - a definition of software engineering, and a few examples of what happens when they fail. Apparently there was a system in London which was implemented for emergency services. It choked so bad that an ambulance arrived at a house after the person had died... and the body been taken away by the undertaker. I also learnt in that class that my 2-hour labs didn't start 'til next week, and the lecture was over in 45 minutes (instead of the hour and a half that it was supposed to take).

So I came back to my room, listened to music and slept, waiting for my 2 pm class. I left my room for lunch, and met Magda by chance at the library, and had sushi for lunch.

Rocked up to my 2pm class (Computer Graphics), and was the first one there. People gradually wandered in, but the whole room remained silent. Despite my best efforts at gaining eye contact and starting a casual conversation with all around me, everyone seemed too preoccupied with the ceiling or the blank whiteboard. Finally, 10 minutes into the scheduled lecture time, the guy in front of me turned around to make sure he was in the right class. I too had been wondering the same thing, and we were =P (Wow, what a story).

However, it turned out that the lecturer was away this week, and that there was no lecture. So I've been free since 8:45, and yet couldn't go anywhere. Oh well, sounds like uni.

On another note, I was surprised at the number of girls in the Computer Graphics class. I reckon it was close to 50-50, probably the highest I've had in any of my classes in uni ever. Interesting =P

And that'd be it for today. I'm going to go to a football match tonight, which should be fun. Apparently it's the big cross-town rivalry thingo. Go the Thunderbirds! (which is apparently the UBC team - no idea why).

And because I have no pictures associated with this post, here's a picture of a bee I took a couple of days ago:

Intro to Software Engineering:
- this is a verb
- this is a noun
Verbs = methods, nouns = classes.
The end.

The bee is washed out :P.

...that sounds like a fun course.

I've got a better photo of the bee, but there's a head in the background, I'll post it next post.

Intro to SE is still about disasters at the moment. Lecture in half an hour, I'll let you know how that goes :P
