... Ice Hockey, the only sport where you can say something like that. Personally I think that's kinda weak, but it's a better game to watch than Football, so I'm not complaining.
That quote is going up there with one of the best from the trip so far, right up there with the story from the Google person, who, on his first week, heard his supervisor say to another Noogler (a New-Googler), "Why are you only using fifteen hundred computers?"
...yeah ONLY fifteen hundred =P
Anyways, I just wanted to make a quick post before I go to Seattle tomorrow morning. Since Thursday I've checked another thing off my list, as well as do a bit of study. I know, I'm surprised too =P
Friday night I saw the UBC Thunderbirds play the Alberta... somethings. And win in overtime =) The game is a little bit random. It seems to favour brute force over anything else. The weirdest part was when the puck was lifted over a bunch of people, and someone just reached out, stuck his hand in the way, knocked it to the ground and continued to skate. Weird moment for me =P
The brute force comes from the fact that you can use any part of your body to get the puck. And there's a lot of knocking players into the sideboards. Quite often the puck is against the sideboards, and players are pushing at each other trying to get the puck which is somewhere at their feet, with the stick which doesn't quite fit in the gaps.
It also involves lots of "lets throw the puck down the other end of the ice and hope one of my players gets there first/wrestles the puck away from the opposition." A bit random. The skating is very cool though, lots of moving around, changing direction, and diving infront of the goal when people are taking a shot. All very cool with the slippery-slidey of the ice.
The other weird thing is that after a team wins, the losing team pretty much goes straight off the ice. The winning team hugs for about 30 seconds and then leaves too. It's also weird that they need 4 coaches in the players' box with them... in a college game.
Today I pretty much wasted. Slept in, went to get some money (US$400 cost me C$404.20 ... not bad =)), and haven't really done any work. Watched the Canucks (Vancouver Ice Hockey team - everyone's crazy about them) win tonight - with 4.7 seconds left in overtime. Kinda cool, and yet kinda sad because I wanted to see a penalty shootout =P
It's also cool that when it goes into overtime, the game switches from 5-on-5 (plus goalies) to 4-on-4. Apparently last year the Canucks made it into the play-offs, where they play 20 minute overtime periods (as opposed to 5), until someone scores (as opposed to one and then go into shootouts). Last year they scored in the 4th period of overtime. A standard time hockey match lasts for three 20 minute periods... that's a lot of overtime, and would've been the most tense match ever to watch =P
Co-incidentally, the title of this blog post was from the commentator of the Canucks match tonight... still can't believe that playing for 1 minute is a long time... although i guess that means that the 20 people in the players' box all get gametime =P (except for the backup goalie - poor dude =P)
Anyways, that's it. I should get to bed soon, because I have to leave early for the bus tomorrow. I shall post when I get back (or the day after I get back most likely), and tell you about me being in the US =D

But I like ice hockey...
It's lots of fun to play (as long as people like you enough not to take you out continuously), and involves lots of skill. I've heard that the American leagues are different from the European ones though. Something about bigger or smaller rinks and more or less contact. Can't remember. =P.
Ice hockey also sounds very cool (when there's none of those crowd people). Well, skating sounds cool in general.
Have fun.
I'm going to beat Tania too!
I'm glad you've seen this strange sport...now you're all ready for curling. I like the fact that the game is in thirds, not quarters or halves. Noice, different, un-you-sual...
Ice hockey makes better watching than curling. Curling is easier though. Just remember not to fall over backwards. I've done that while playing both sports. It's not the most fun.
And I'm kinda sure the backup goalie usually gets some game time too... Not very sure though.
Curling is apparently bigger in the east - or so I've heard. Not sure whether I'll be able to play either sport, but hopefully I think there's an ice skating thing happening sometime this week.
I want to go see a Canucks game, but apparently the cheapest ticket is in the $60-70 range =(
